“The transatlantic alliance is back”

Munich (dpa) – New U.S. President Joe Biden has described the partnership with Europe as the “cornerstone” of American foreign policy and made a clear commitment to NATO. “America is back. The transatlantic alliance is back,” he said Friday at the Munich Security Conference. “We are looking forward together.” Biden was drawing a line under the era of his predecessor Donald Trump, during which relations had sunk to a low point. Biden was the first U.S. president to speak at a Munich Security Conference. The world’s most important meeting of experts on security policy was supposed to last three days and take place at the Bayerischer Hof Hotel in Munich. Because of the Corona pandemic, it now became a digital event, with participants joining in via video.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel accepted the outstretched hand of the new U.S. president: “Germany stands ready for a new chapter in the transatlantic partnership.” She offered Biden more engagement, including militarily, especially in the European neighborhood.
